  • When do you inform current employer about new opportunities?

You may have heard I'm not satisfied with being a project manager in this department at my current company. The project looks like it will last till sept. I'm being pursued by a company I've worked with previously and enjoyed working with those folks AND it's a programmer role. I'm open to considering an offer if they provide one. At what point do I tell my current employer I'm looking or being pursued?

Previously it was after I had an offer in hand because before that nothing was solid/decided.

I mentioned to my manager at the start and just recently that the reason he hired me was for a software developer and not a project manager. I also conveyed that PM is not the work I want to be doing.

    Thoughts?

  • I'd suggest in this case - not until its time to go. If you had a long, and deep relationship, and cared enough for the department - but in this case - it sounds like it was a wrong decision. No harm in just saying - look - it didn't work out - and I have an offer and am taking it.
